The BrainLift explores how to revolutionize teen mental health by combining AI-powered plushies (like Berry) with leading-edge neuroscience, psychology, and research on teen development. The project challenges mainstream therapy models—arguing that traditional, adult-focused approaches fail to meet teens’ needs in an age dominated by technology, social media, and status anxiety. The BrainLift questions core assumptions about therapy, mental wellness, and human connection, and maps a new paradigm for action-oriented, personalized, and emotionally attuned mental health support. Grounded by a vast knowledge tree—from habit science to neural networks, CBT, attachment, growth mindset, and self-actualization—it details the root causes of insecurity, the power of intrinsic validation, actionable skill-building, and the role of reflection, connection, and identity. This synthesis is powered by in-depth research, leading expert insights, and science-backed playbooks for transforming how young people understand and upgrade their brains, habits, and relationships.
Alex Matthew is passionate about philosophy, psychology, and understanding how people live fulfilling lives. With a strong interest in mental health and technology, Alex is building innovative solutions to help teens reflect and grow. He is driven by a mission to lower barriers to mental health support and is committed to making a positive impact on the world.
Continue developing Berry to make it widely accessible and free, expand partnerships (e.g., Build-A-Bear), and attend Stanford University to further academic and entrepreneurial goals.
Alex participated in hackathons and deep-dive sessions (rabbit holothon) to explore the intersection of AI and mental health. He identified the core problem of making mental health support more accessible and began conceptualizing Barry. Activities included researching the field, brainstorming solutions, and building an initial prototype using custom GPT tools, which was tested with 40 users.
To lower the barrier to entry for mental health support among teens by providing an accessible, stigma-free, and engaging tool for daily reflection and growth.
Primarily 14-17 year olds (teens) in America, with plans to expand to younger and older users in the future.
Berry is an AI-powered plushie designed to support teen mental health. Teens can talk to Berry about their problems and receive personalized, real-time audible advice, helping them reflect and grow in a safe, stigma-free way. This project represents months of dedicated research, development, and implementation, resulting in a solution that addresses real-world challenges and creates meaningful impact.
"I am revolutionizing mental health care by creating AI-powered plushies that provide personalized emotional assistance, improving the mental well-being of 1 billion pre-teens and teens worldwide."
